I just wanted to write an article about home business in 2009. Statistics are showing that more people are looking at home business in this deep recession than ever before.

Many people have lost trust and faith in their traditional jobs, constantly living with the fear of layoffs. Home-based business for many has become a necessity, as well as a desire because of the dire state of our economy.

People are hedging their bets as well, by having a home business on the side, just in case they or their partner becomes another layoff statistic.

As a home business owner for the last 10 years, I see the true value of having a home business. I love the fact that I do not have a boss, in addition to the fact that I set my own hours, plan my own vacations, and take time off at my own discretion.

In addition, having your own home-based business has strong tax benefits, a chance to network with people all over the country, as well as the chance for true financial freedom.

Having a home business, however, is not without its’ realities and truths. Although there are tremendous benefits to having a home business, there are things you must be aware of before you start your journey.

1. You must do your due diligence before embarking on a home business. There are many scams out there, and these scams are all over the internet. Please do your research before making your decision. Check out the financial health of the company, the team you decide to join, as well as whether or not you see longevity in the business opportunity. 2. Home business does not mean easy riches overnight. If you are promised this, you are also being lied to. It takes time to build a home business and there are advertising costs involved. It can take many months.. at least for it to truly be a stable source of income for you and your family. 3. Having a home business does not mean sitting around in your pajamas all day eating bon bons and watching soap operas or spending most of your day, every day at the beach. You must discipline yourself and devote many hours per day to your home business. Your business will not run on its’ own. You need to be the master of your business, and work at it daily. 4. When you have a home business, you must be aware that your income may not be steady at first, and will fluctuate weekly. You must put money away for a rainy day when you have a home business so that you do not have to resort to credit cards and your savings to keep you afloat. This is a much different experience than having a salary, and it will take some getting used to. 5. When you have a home business you are in charge of sales, marketing, customer service, advertising, and more. You may want to hire others to help you with all of these aspects of your business, because doing it all alone can be a daunting task.

It is hoped that some of these realities were helpful to you. These truths are not meant to dissuade you  in any way, but were written to help you realize that having a home business takes work, patience, and discipline.

So, you want to start a home based business. Well, you are certainly not alone. Millions of individuals scour the internet every month searching for legitimate home based businesses with the dream of making it big and leaving their jobs. Every day, someone is thinking, “There must be a better way,” or “Please help me quit my job,” or “I want to work from home.”

Today, many people are afraid. They are fearful of their economic futures, and the term, “This Economy” is spoken everywhere, and not in a positive light. What this means is that there are a lot of people struggling to make ends meet.

Many are hoping for an economic miracle. Others have decided to start a home based business to help improve their situation.

Before you act on the impulse to start a home based business, there are a few things to consider. Let’s examine two major “red flags” indicating that you are NOT ready to venture into the world of the home based business entrepreneur – and what you can do to change the situation.

Red Flag #1: You feel desperate. You don’t make enough money. Perhaps you hate your job, and you’ll do anything to leave your current job situation. Or, you may be afraid you are about to lose your job.

Why this indicates that you are not ready: If you are feeling desperate and miserable, this is not a good time to start a home based business because you will carry that feeling of desperation into your search for a legitimate home based business opportunity. And instead of calmly weighing the pros and cons of various serious and profitable opportunities, You will be more likely to act out of desperation, falling for “get rich quick” scams – probably more than one – and spending your already hard-earned money on something that you feel will be a quick fix to your situation – that “magic bullet” that, frankly, does not exist.

How to change the situation: The first thing to do is calm yourself, and look at where the feelings of desperation come from. What can you change in your own attitude to make your job more bearable while you search for a profitable home based business? Instead of feeling angry and desperate, can you teach yourself to see the positive in your situation?

For example, if you already have a job – even if it’s not a great job – you could be thankful that you have a source of income that can help you save up for the right opportunity. You could sit yourself down and take full responsibility for where you are – after all, you made the decisions that led you to where you are now, and you can now make decisions to take another direction, if you choose. Just do it rationally, and without emotion.

Release your feelings of desperation and hate – those feelings are not who you are. You are a lot bigger than that! There are plenty of places online to learn the techniques that can help you change your own outlook. Use search terms like “self development resources” or “self development techniques,” etc.

Red Flag #2: You are broke. You have debts you cannot pay, and you think that if only you could start a home based business, that this will cure everything.

Why this indicates that you are not ready: I don’t care whether you think you’ve found the Holy Grail of home based businesses. If you are already in deep debt, you will go further into debt. Why? Because being in business for yourself costs money.

Even if you have a paying job, and just want to start something on the side to help pay your debts, if you are unable to stay current with your payments, you will not be able to get the credit or financing that you might need to get your home based business off the ground.

Running a business costs far more than the “5 to 10 hours per week” that so many business opportunities tout as being all that’s necessary to succeed. Scheduling your time commitment is only one part of the equation. You need to schedule your money commitment (aka “budget”) too.

How to change the situation: First of all, understand at the get-go that if you intend to start a home based business, you WILL need to spend money. Stop searching for “free home based business opportunities,” or “easy home based business,” and get real.You don’t get anything for nothing. Ever.

So, before you decide to jump into a home based business, decide how much you can save for your start up costs which will undoubtedly include advertising, website hosting fees, months of carrying your business before the search engines begin to recognize you, and qualified buyers begin to find and visit your website.

If you are truly passionate about starting a home based business, then you will do what it takes to pay down your debts and begin to formulate a logical plan to undertake a serious home based business venture. Until that day, you are not ready.

Depending on the type of home based business opportunity you are looking at, you can probably find others who are already active in the opportunity what type of budget is necessary to maintain the effort until you begin to earn profits.

Finally, you may be saying, “But, I really AM passionate about starting a home based business! Where can I get the money?”

This oft-asked question has a relatively simple answer – but unless you have the strength, determination, and self-discipline to do this, you won’t do it. And this is where the rubber meets the road.

Here is the answer (drum roll please): Sell your stuff. Get rid of it. Sell on eBay. Sell on CraigsList. Have a yard sale – have more than one yard sale. Just sell your stuff. Most people have far more stuff than they need. Do you REALLY need 10 pairs of shoes? How about that (Heaven forbid), that “Wii” you just had to have? How about your collection of collectible bears, NASCAR, purses, Goth skulls, or electronic do-dads?

How badly do you want to start a home based business? How badly do you want success? Sell the TV – or at least one of them (it’s a huge time waster anyway).

Sell the 4×4 SUV that you really don’t need to begin with. If you have kids, get them on board with you – kids are great dreamers and the thought of better stuff might nudge them in the right direction.

What else can you do? Stop spending needlessly. Buy your clothes from thrift stores instead of the department store for a while. One person we know plans “treasure hunting” trips to thrift stores with her kids – it has become a fun game, not a deprivation.

Do you really need that new handbag? Do you really need that piece of jewelry? Brand name versus generic? And on, and on…

If the last few paragraphs offend you, and you cannot bear to 1) part with your stuff and/or 2) stop buying more stuff in order to realize a dream, then you are not passionate about starting a serious home based business opportunity. That’s just the way it is.

But… If you felt your heart begin to pound just a little when you thought about possibilities instead of limitations, if you felt hope instead of desperation, faith instead of fear – then, my friend, you WILL find a way – not only to START a home based business, but SUCCEED.

The Internet is littered with all sorts of business opportunities making promises they can’t keep. Unfortunately, many of the home-business opportunities that offer get rich overnight schemes are just that. They get your money and give you nothing but an empty bank account in return. Hundreds of people per year find the perfect online business to suit their income requirements. The Internet has assisted in the financial freedom of thousands of people in the past 10 years. Imagine having the ability to leave your stressful job for the freedom of running your own home-based business.

The most successful online businesses tend to follow a mentorship model. Online businesses that offer mentorship have a much higher success rate than those that do not. When new entrepreneurs have a mentor they can rely on for valuable information, they are more likely to build their dream businesses. Multi-level Marketing and Network Marketing businesses often follow a mentorship business model. No matter how high or minimal your personal goal, your mentor’s goal is to help you achieve it. Your mentor has a vested interest in your success. It is worth your time to listen.

Many people think all MLM and Network Marketing businesses are scams. While it is true that some are scams, several are not. You must do your research and know the right questions to ask. Always be skeptical, but keep your possibilities open. It will take time to find the right MLM or Network Marketing business to suit your personality and your income needs.

Any Network Marketing or MLM  business that offers you the ability to make thousands of dollars over night is probably a scam. This type of business offer shouldn’t be taken seriously. On the other hand, if an Network Marketing or MLM business offers you the ability to make thousands of dollars within a couple of months, it most certainely can be true and just might be worth checking out.

MLMs and Network Marketing businesses have created several millionaires over the years. Generally these millionaires have put in several thousand hours of hard work to reap the rewards they now enjoy. No legitimate online business opportunity will guarantee you money with no investment or work from you. As with any brick-and-mortar business, an online business requires hard work and dedication to create success. If you are looking for an overnight success, don’t look into MLM.

Serious entrepreneurs understand the initial costs involved with starting their own businesses. Aside from the initial startup cost and time involved, a lot of hard work goes into building a business. Someone who is serious also understands the hard work involved in marketing and promotion. Marketing and promotion costs should always be taken into consideration when planning to start your home business. The path to financial freedom can be blocked by hidden charges and fees. You must be aware of these and have a way to counter them.

If you are currently planning to invest in an online business opportunity, be sure you have researched everything thoroughly. Do not rush into anything or feel pressured by “limited quantities” of business kit options. This income is a percentage earned off of all of customer product orders and is sent to you as long as your clients remain customers.

Myth:
You have more time to spend with family.

Truth:
You may see your family more but this does not mean that you will spend more quality time with them. In business, your success is totally dependent on your production. In the beginning of building your home based business, you will find that there is a great amount of work involved; work that in the end will pay off. Being around your family more often may work against you and the quality of your work, if you do not lay some ground rules ahead of time. It’s best to discuss your goals and plans with your family and give them a clear understanding of how they should treat your work home career and the importance of giving you the space you need to get the job done.

Myth:
I’ll make a whole lot of money.

Truth:
This is one of the most common mistakes when deciding on a work home career. You should never assume that just because someone is earning a lucrative salary in a fraction of the time spent in the business, you are sure to have those same results. Everyone is different. We all approach and reach others on different levels and so on. What works for one person will not always work for someone else. If you join a business solely based on this, you will get burned out and will most likely quit. You must have a passion for what you do and you must believe in what you are representing. If you don’t absolutely one hundred percent love what you do, how are you going to convince others to do the same.

Myth:
Working in business is more stable than having an outside job.

Truth:
This can be no more further from the truth. Businesses are not anymore stable than regular companies. Nothing in life is guaranteed. As an independent contractor working for a business, some contracts state the company does not even need a reason for letting you go. What does that tell you?

Myth:
There are no rules associated with working a home based business. I can work however I want.

Truth:
Wrong. You may be able to work “whenever” you want. But there are always going to be policies and laws in everything that has to do with “how” you choose to market the business and the manner in which you do. Some companies prohibit online marketing, or using their company name directly, and even using your own printing materials. That’s right, just because it’s free or cheap to join, does not mean there aren’t other fees associate with doing your job. Having the freedom to work from home comes with huge responsibilities. Unless you know what you are doing, wandering in unchartered territory can lead to sinking.

There are so many reasons for you to do your homework when reviewing work from home businesses. . Don’t allow others to persuade you into entering an agreement you do not feel comfortable with or one you do not fully understand. You must honestly decide for yourself what is best for you. Can that be continuing to work outside the home or joining a home based business? That decision is for you to decide and you alone. But making your decision doesn’t have to wreck your brain. Here are some pointers that you should consider within your search:

Company Reputation/Integrity

You want to check this carefully. Are there any ripoff reports on them? What is their standing with the BBB? Do they have any current or past lawsuits filed against them? What about customer reviews or the way they treat their clients? What about former contractors? Why did they quit? It’s amazing what you find lurking in forums, message boards, and online groups. If there is any negative feedback, and you are diligent in your searching, you’ll definitely find it. Remember that a business will only sell you. That is the job of everyone associated with it. So you will get nothing but praises from a current member. But ex-members will spill the beans and the beans, are exactly what you want.

Company/Business Policies, Rules and Regulations

Every company and business has their own policy statement. There is always something you sign that is associated with the job you accept or business you join. You want to read this carefully before signing. If you do not understand the jargon, just ask your en-roller or the company human resources. It is vital that you understand your rights and your obligations associated with the position you’ve accepted. I’ve seen some speak about a particular business that cancels your membership if you don’t advertise in the exact manner specified in their policies. Just be very careful and know what you are signing.

Company/Business Training and Employee/Member Interaction

Another disadvantage. If you are trained by your down-line and for some reason, this person either sucks or the two of you do not get along, “tough”. You are either stuck or you have to be strung along through some long drawn out procedure to get switched. This is not the case for all, only some.

Termination/Voluntary Separation

Every business states a different policy relating to termination or “notice of separation”. Some state they can terminate you for any reason at any given time. Others may state that once you are separated from the company you can no longer venture in a business that is related to theirs or even create one. If you are in a business and do not know your policies or what you can or can not do associated with this, please read carefully. The business does have a right to prosecute you if you violate these policies.

It’s obvious that choosing a path such as this is not easy and comes with a hefty price. It could be time, money, heartache, pain or more. It could also be rewarding, worth your while and the best choice you’ve ever made. Predicting the fate is not always clear, but research and wisdom can guide your fate in a great direction. So know the cost and decide wisely for your family and for your future.

Second, are you passionate about this product?  Is there a fire burning inside that motivates you to get going?  If this is true, you have probably found the best home business for you.  This can be very personal.  I know it is for me.  I have to feel passionate about my best home business for me to effectively introduce people to my business.  If I take a lackadaisical attitude toward my home business, then others will probably respond with a lack of interest, too.  People are very intuitive.  You are.  You know when people are trying to snowball you.  Have a passion for your best home business and that will never be a problem.

Third, do you need a support team?  Are you all set up in your best home business and ready to take this on all by yourself?  I, personally think not.  There is somewhat of a learning curve to owing a business online and your best home business should most definitely have a support team.  A team that has more experience and can teach you the necessary steps to getting your best home business off to a good start.  Otherwise, like I have found, you could run up against some roadblocks, maybe have a failure or two and completely give up.  Now, we don’t want that to happen.  So, in your search for the best home business, make sure you check out what kind of team support exists.

You know, finding the best home business really isn’t as hard as it may seem.  Sure there are lots of offers out there.  Remember to do your research and don’t forget to keep these 3 things in mind when considering your best home business.

G= Goals: Make a list of goals for your business. You can make them weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly or yearly goals. Cross off the goals that you meet and work on the rest of the list. This will help you to “keep” focus on what you want out of your home business.

H= Help: When you need help ask for it. When other’s need help, offer to help.

I= Investment: Invest time into working on your business on a consistent basis. The more you invest your time, the more you will get out of your business.

J= Just Ask: Tell everyone you know about your business and ask them to book a party, to place an order or to accept a catalog/business card from you. Just Ask!!!!

K= Kick Off: If you are new to the business, have a Kick Off Grand Opening Party! Every time your business comes out with new products or a new catalog, its your job to kick off the new products by promoting them.

L= Learning: You can never learn enough about having a home business. You can do research at your local library, local chamber of commerce, home business associations, online and offline home business networking groups and learn all that you can from training provided by your company and upline managers.

M= Marketing: You need to market your home business to get business exposure!

N= Networking: You need to network consitently with other home business owners.

O= Organization: Get yourself and your business organized.
